Several Reasons You May Have Toe Pain

An underlying medical condition may cause pain in the big toe. These can consist of arthritis, gout, or an injury that is the result of a fracture. A bunion may cause big toe pain and is generally felt on the bottom of the toe. Additionally, a source of toe pain can come from an ingrown toenail and this may cause difficulty in walking. Intense pain in the toe can be a result of gout, which can develop from excess uric acid in the blood. Crystals can form in the joints of the big toe and this often causes severe pain and discomfort. People who frequently participate in sporting activities may experience turf toe. This comes from being involved in repetitive activities and can cause the big toe to bend in an abnormal position. The sesamoid bones are found inside the muscles and are connected to tendons. Sesamoiditis can develop from inflamed tendons under the big toe as a result of repetitive use. If you have toe pain, please seek the counsel of a podiatrist who can accurately confirm its source, and provide effective treatment methods.

Toe pain can be caused by one or more ailments. The most common include:

  • Sports injury
  • Wearing shoes that are too tight

  • Severe pain
  • Persistent pain that lasts more than a week

Diagnosis

In many cases the cause of toe pain is obvious, but in others, a podiatrist may want to use more advanced methods to determine the problem. These can range from simple visual inspections and sensation tests to X-rays and MRI scans. Prior medical history, family medical history, and any recent physical traumatic events will all be taken into consideration for a proper diagnosis.

Treatment

Treatments for toe pain and injuries vary and may include shoe inserts, padding, taping, medicines, injections, and in some cases, surgery. If you believe that you have broken a toe, please see a podiatrist as soon as possible.

Methods to Exercise the Feet

The feet carry the weight of the body, and provide the foundation for positive physical and mental health. If the feet are weak, and range of motion is limited, the joints and muscles in the foot may compensate. This can result in foot pain. This can cause an increased risk in falling, and it is helpful for several reasons to maintain foot strength. Additionally, the ankles may work harder than they should to keep the body moving. An effective foot stretch is called the “folded blanket walk.” This is done by placing a blanket on the floor, and beginning to walk on it. This can be beneficial in promoting balance and flexibility. Additionally, a popular foot stretch consists of rolling the sole of the foot from the top to the bottom on a tennis ball while sitting in a chair. This is beneficial in keeping the arch of the foot strong. Toe lifts are done to strengthen the toes, and they are practiced by sitting in a chair, and lifting each toe individually. There are many different types of foot exercises that can be done daily, and if you would like more information about the benefits and how to perform them, please consult with a podiatrist.

Exercising your feet regularly with the proper foot wear is a great way to prevent injuries and build strength. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact one of our doctors from Favor Foot Ankle Leg & Wound Center. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

For those of us fortunate enough to not have any foot problems, it is an important gesture to take care of them to ensure good health in the long run.

Some foot health exercises can include ankle pumps, tip-toeing, toe rises, lifting off the floor doing reps and sets, and flexing the toes. It is best to speak with Our doctors to determine an appropriate regimen for your needs. Everyone’s needs and bodies are different, and the activities required to maintain strength in the feet vary from individual to individual.

Once you get into a routine of doing regular exercise, you may notice a difference in your feet and how strong they may become.

All About Fractures to the Little Toe

Fractures to the 5th metatarsal, or the pinky toe, are quite common. When the fracture occurs in the middle section of the metatarsal, it is known as a Jones fracture. The main cause is sudden force on the outside of the foot. A Jones fracture is common to athletes, dancers, and workers who stand for long periods. Men around 30, who are physically active, and women over 70, who may have osteoporosis, are more likely to sustain a Jones fracture as well. Symptoms include pain, swelling, tenderness, and difficulty walking. Check for discoloration or a bump on the side of the foot that is not usually there. It is not always easy to detect a Jones fracture through an X-ray, and in many cases an MRI or other imaging test may be required. As Jones fractures typically do not heal rapidly, it might take months before you can resume normal activities. If you believe you have sustained a Jones fracture, it’s a good idea to see a podiatrist as soon as possible for an exam and diagnosis.

A broken toe can be very painful and lead to complications if not properly fixed. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact one of our doctors from Favor Foot Ankle Leg & Wound Center. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What to Know About a Broken Toe

Although most people try to avoid foot trauma such as banging, stubbing, or dropping heavy objects on their feet, the unfortunate fact is that it is a common occurrence. Given the fact that toes are positioned in front of the feet, they typically sustain the brunt of such trauma. When trauma occurs to a toe, the result can be a painful break (fracture).

Symptoms of a Broken Toe

  • Throbbing pain
  • Swelling
  • Bruising on the skin and toenail
  • The inability to move the toe
  • Toe appears crooked or disfigured
  • Tingling or numbness in the toe

Generally, it is best to stay off of the injured toe with the affected foot elevated.

Severe toe fractures may be treated with a splint, cast, and in some cases, minor surgery. Due to its position and the pressure it endures with daily activity, future complications can occur if the big toe is not properly treated.

As people age, they are at an increasing risk of suffering a dangerous fall. However, there are several ways in which seniors can prevent trips and tumbles by focusing on their feet. Specifically, seniors can practice simple, isolated foot exercises to strengthen their muscles and improve stability. First, a senior can practice heel-toe walking by slowly placing one foot directly in front of the other in succession, making sure that each time the heel is placed up against the other foot’s toes. It might be helpful to extend the arms horizontally at one’s sides or lightly touch a wall for extra balance. Additionally, a senior may perform foot taps, where one stands at the bottom of a staircase with their feet hip-width apart and slowly raises each foot to gently tap the top of the bottom stair. One can alternate feet each time to help build stability and balance. Each of these exercises can be performed three to five times per week. A senior might even consider performing these exercises with the help of a friend or loved one. A podiatrist can give you more tips about improving balance to prevent falls.

Preventing falls among the elderly is very important. If you are older and have fallen or fear that you are prone to falling, consult with one of our doctors from Favor Foot Ankle Leg & Wound Center. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality advice and care.

Every 11 seconds, an elderly American is being treated in an emergency room for a fall related injury. Falls are the leading cause of head and hip injuries for those 65 and older. Due to decreases in strength, balance, senses, and lack of awareness, elderly persons are very susceptible to falling. Thankfully, there are a number of things older persons can do to prevent falls.

How to Prevent Falls

Some effective methods that older persons can do to prevent falls include:

  • Enrolling in strength and balance exercise program to increase balance and strength
  • Periodically having your sight and hearing checked
  • Discuss any medications you have with a doctor to see if it increases the risk of falling
  • Clearing the house of falling hazards and installing devices like grab bars and railings
  • Utilizing a walker or cane
  • Wearing shoes that provide good support and cushioning
  • Talking to family members about falling and increasing awareness

Falling can be a traumatic and embarrassing experience for elderly persons; this can make them less willing to leave the house, and less willing to talk to someone about their fears of falling. Doing such things, however, will increase the likelihood of tripping or losing one’s balance. Knowing the causes of falling and how to prevent them is the best way to mitigate the risk of serious injury.
